How to Make Your Own Ice Cream

The art of making ice cream is one that has been around for centuries. It has changed since ancient times but the way we make it in modern culture is pretty much an unchanged process for many decades. Of course, to make ice cream at home, you are not going to recreate what the professionals do at the ice cream factories that produce thousands of gallons of ice cream to be sold in ice cream parlors and grocery stores every day.

The ice cream you make at home will not taste like the kind you buy at the store either. In many ways, it will be much better. For one thing, you will use fresh ingredients. The fruits or other additives you use to give your ice cream a unique taste will probably be very fresh which makes the ice cream taste great. But just making it yourself, is such a great experience that the ice cream you make will always taste better because one of the ingredients you add will be your own personal touch, your work, love and pride that all will affect how much you enjoy the finished product.

Of course, a good recipe is always a great start. There are an abundance of great ice cream recipes each of which will produce a unique ice cream with its own peculiar personality. If you have a recipe that has been handed down through your family, that will help you make ice cream that tastes "like grandma used to make". That connection to the past is one of the many reasons people love to make their own ice cream. But don't despair if you don’t have a family recipe because you can get
one from friends, books or from the internet.

The ingredients of home-made ice cream are neither exotic nor expensive. To simply combine cream or milk with vanilla, eggs, salt and ice and put it all together in your ice cream maker is the heart of any ice cream formula. When first learning, you might do well to practice with just the basic ingredients until you are happy with the ice cream you are making. Then get fancy with the extra flavours and additives.

Its all great fun and a great hobby so have a ball making lots of varieties of home-made ice cream. Once the recipe is all together and you have loaded up the churn or ice cream machine with the ice and salt, you just activate the electric mechanism to churn the ice cream. Or if it is manual, turn that crank for about ten minutes to give the ice plenty of time and movement to freeze the ice cream in
the smaller interior chamber. After about 10 minutes, stop and check the ice cream to see if its setting up. If not, go another 10 minutes.

After you have done the "hard labor", you should still plan to put the finished ice cream in the freezer for two or three hours to finish freezing into a wonderful frozen treat. The last instruction is the easiest one. Enjoy your ice cream and share it with family and friends. Then get busy planning your next big ice cream party using your skills at making tasty ice cream at home.

Filipino Chicken Soup

Most Filipinos never let their guests go hungry. That’s one Filipino way of taking care of their guests. To give a warm welcome to their homes, they often serve Tinolang Manok to their guests.

One of the many popular dishes in the Philippines is known as Tinolang Manok. It is otherwise known as Chicken Ginger Soup. Pretty much like the chicken soup our moms used to make with an Asian twist due to the ginger. Each province in the Philippines would its own version of Tinolang Manok. They’re all based on a single theme — chicken and ginger.

You can’t say that Tinolang Manok is Tinolang Manok without the ginger. The ginger gives the Tinolang Manok a special Asian aroma and taste. Without ginger, the Tinolang Manok would lose its identifying zest and appeal.

Now here’s how to cook Tinolang Manok. Let’s begin with the ingredients of this dish. We would need the following to make Tinolang Manok:

A half kilo of Chicken, chopped into pieces.
Four cups of chicken stock. (If you don’t have chicken stock you can use a chicken bullion cube mixed in four cups of water. This can be bought in any Filipino store)
One medium-sized green papaya, peeled and cut into cubes.
Three cups of chili leaves, spinach, or pechay.
Two cloves of garlic, crushed.
One tablespoon crushed ginger.
Two tablespoons of sliced onions.
Four tablespoons cooking oil.
Two tablespoons of Fish Sauce (Patis)

Now that we have all our ingredients, here’s how we cook Tinolang Manok. First, we heat the oil in a stockpot and saute the ginger, onion and garlic. Remember to saute the ginger much longer than the onion and garlic. This is so you can enhance the essence of the ginger of the Tinolang Manok (big cooking secret, keep that in mind).

After you saute the spices, add the chopped chicken and saute until the chicken is partly cooked. Put in the fish sauce (this can also be bought at a Filipino store), stir for few seconds and add the chicken stock. Let it boil and simmer until 20 minutes. Add the papaya into the pot and let it cook. Turn off the heat and add the chili leaves and toss. Serve the Tinolang Manok while it’s hot. It is best served with rice.

There are many popular dishes in the Philippine islands. One of these is the famous Tinolang Manok. Like our mom’s homemade chicken soup, it is relaxing, tasty, and the chicken meat is in perfect harmony with steaming rice. Tinolang Manok is a Filipino dish that will welcome you to every Filipino home.

The symbols on the white triangle of the Philippine flag are an eight rayed sun and three stars in gold. The sun represents the dawning of a new era of self determination that was desired in 1897 (when the flag was first designed) after the Spanish-American war and the US promise of independence, which was granted in 1946. The 8 rays on the sun stand for the 8 provinces that rose in revolt against Spanish rule in the late 19th century. The 3 stars stand for the 3 principal geographic areas of the country, Luzon, the Visayas and Mindanao. To complete the symbolism of the flag, the red stripe represents courage and bravery and the blue stripe is for noble ideals. The white triangle stands for the Katipunan, a revolutionary organization that led the revolt against Spain and the color white represents peace and purity. Symptoms of Diabetes

The most consistent symptom of diabetes mellitus (Type I and II) is elevated blood sugar levels. In Type I (insulin dependent / early onset) diabetes, this is caused by the body not producing enough insulin to properly regulate blood sugar. In Type II (non insulin dependent/adult onset) diabetes, it is caused by the body developing resistance to insulin, so it cannot properly use what it produces.

However, high blood sugar is not something you can see in the mirror at home, so it is useful to know the side-effects of high blood sugar, which are commonly recognized as the noticeable symptoms of diabetes.

If you find yourself experiencing many of these diabetes symptoms on a consistent, long term basis, you should visit a doctor to be tested for diabetes. Ignoring (or not recognizing) the symptoms of diabetes can lead to long-term serious health risks and complications from untreated diabetes. Some of the common 'early warning' signs of diabetes are:

The first symptom of diabetes is often excessive thirst (unrelated to exercise, hot weather, or short-term illness)
Excessive hunger (you know you've eaten "enough" but are still hungry all the time)
Frequent urination (often noticed because you must wake up repeatedly during the night)
Tiredness and fatigue (possibly severe enough to make you fall asleep unexpectedly after meals), one of the most common symptoms of diabetes.
Rapid and/or sudden weight loss (any dramatic change in weight is a sign to visit a doctor)

While many of the signs and symptoms of diabetes can also be related to other causes, testing for diabetes is very easy, and the constant/regular presence of one or more of these symptoms over an extended period of time should be cause for a visit to the doctor.

If diabetes is suspected, tested for, and diagnosed when those symptoms first start appearing, other more serious symptoms of advanced diabetes can often be prevented or have their onset significantly delayed through diet, exercise and proper blood sugar management.

However, often the 'minor' symptoms of diabetes go unrecognized, and physical and neurological problems may arise, resulting in some
of the following symptoms:

Blurred vision (diabetes can lead to macular degeneration and eventual blindness)
Numbness and/or tingling in the hands and feet (peripheral neuropathy, a symptom of diabetes, causes nerve damage in the extremities)
Slow healing of minor scratches and wounds (diabetes often leads to impaired immune system function)
Recurrent or hard-to-treat yeast infections in women (another sign of impaired immune function)
Dry or itchy skin (peripheral neuropathy also affects circulation and proper sweat gland function)

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms on a regular basis, or you recognize these symptoms in a child or relative, they may be signs of untreated diabetes. You probably already know how to create custom icons for your local C drive or for your CD drive, but did you know there is an easy way to create custom icons for USB flash drives also? So whenever you plug in your USB stick into any computer, it’ll show up with your custom icon instead of the basic removable disk icon that Windows uses.

Here’s how you can create a custom flash drive icon:

First you’ll need to either find a .ico file on your computer that you would like to use or you will need to create your own. If you want to see all of the different icons that are already on your computer, simply perform a search in Windows for *.ICO.

If you do not like any of the icons already stored on your computer, you can create your own custom .ico file very easily by going to a site called FavIcon from Pics. It’s super easy to use, simply click Browse and select the file you want to convert into a fav icon and click Generate FavIcon.ico.

Go ahead and copy this icon file to the root of your USB flash drive and rename it to autorun.ico. Next, you will need to create a text file in Notepad called autorun.inf and place it in the root of the USB flash drive with the following text inside:

As you can see, the file just tells Windows the name of the icon file it wants to use as the drive icon. You can actually change the name of the icon file if you want to anything you like as long as you put that same name in the second line of the of autorun.inf file.

Survivor winner takes case to Supreme Court

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - "Survivor" winner Richard Hatch has appealed his tax evasion conviction to the U.S. Supreme Court, his attorney said Tuesday.

Hatch was convicted two years ago of failing to pay taxes on the $1 million prize he won on the debut season of the hit CBS reality series. The Newport man was sentenced to more than four years in prison.

Hatch's lawyer, Michael Minns, has said his client confronted producers about cheating during taping of the show, and a producer promised his taxes would be paid if he kept quiet and went on to win the competition. CBS has said Hatch's claims have no merit.

In a brief filed with the Supreme Court on May 23, Minns argued the judge improperly prevented Hatch from testifying about the conversation.

Minns also argued the judge unfairly limited his cross-examination of the tax accountant who prepared Hatch's tax returns and who was a key witness for the government.
"He's extremely optimistic about his appeal," Minns said. "He still believes the system should work."

The U.S. Supreme Court takes up only a small number of the appeals it receives.
Minns also said Hatch was writing a book about "his experiences with the legal system and his disappointment not just with the problems that he suffered but with the problems other people have suffered that he has met."

Hatch also was convicted of evading taxes on his earnings as co-host of a Boston radio show and from rental properties. He was acquitted of seven fraud charges related to a charity he planned to open for troubled youth.

The Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park is located about 50 km north of the city of Puerto Princesa, Palawan, Philippines. 10,000 B.C. is a suitably old-fashioned action story, which is emminently suitable to the sort of old-fashioned fantasy/adventure tale it tells, one that is set in the remote past, when Stonehenge was more or less new, and before even the pyramids were built. Depending upon, of course, which version of the past to which you subscribe. Nicel paced, there is also the requisite dash of mysticism and an as it considers the origins of myth as well as the spread of agriculture and how very cool the saber-toothed tiger must have been.

It all starts when the woolly mammoths start disappearing from the lands of the mammoth hunter, whose name implies the dependent nature of their relationship. Their shaman, Old Mother (Mona Hammond), invokes the spirits and learns that times will get worse, but that a sign will come and a warrior will arise and save them all. The sign is a girl with blue eyes, something unknown in this tribe, and her arrival is anything but auspicious. She’s found in the mountains clinging to a dead woman, her entire people wiped out by what Old Mother calls demons with four legs. Years pass, Evolet (Camilla Belle) grows up and grows sweet on D’Leh (Steven Strait), the outcast whose father abandoned the tribe years ago for reasons known only to the tribe’s chief, Tic’Tic (Cliff Curtis), who has taken the boy under his wing. D’Leh is sweet on Evolet, too, but in order to win her, he must win Tic’Tic’s white spear of authority in what everyone is calling the last mammoth hunt. If only it were as simple as bringing down a mammoth single-handed.

There are no fur bikinis here, no leather speedos, and no throbbing rock score. There is instead a respect for the received wisdom of Neolithic life with no glaring anachronisms of the sort to jolt the lay viewer. Hairdos are dreadlocks and it takes no stretch of the imagination to assume lice living on some of the characters. The attitude of nature towards humankind is one of complete indifference for its continual survival as anything more than a foodstuff.

The demons return, they are actually men on horseback, and a raiding party from a civilization that has domesticated animals, learned weaving, and have need for slaves. That latter obtained by raiding parties to the far north. D’Leh escapes, but Evolet is among those taken and so there is nothing for it but for him to track her down, and all the hunters taken with her, the ones on whom the tribe relies for survival, save the tribe, get the girl, and start a legend. This makes for some truly lively hunting sequences. Mammoths being outsmarted, but not by much, by the tribe, and later, on the trek south the tribesmen themselves, as well as the raiders, by a creature that is more unexpected than impossible, and one that makes an excellent case that dinosaurs still walk among us, but in a radically different form. The face off between D’Leh and the saber-tooth smacks just a little too much of an iconic moment in ALIEN, but redeems itself by going on to glorify how amazing those extinct felines were.

Naturally, there are prophecies involved, most of which seem to point to D’Leh. His ultimate destination is the appropriately menacing monikered Mountain of God, from which, to add to the sense of dread, no one has ever returned. It helps that along the way he invents astral navigation, at least for his tribe and the army of Africans who have joined him.

Emmerich, who directed and co-wrote the script, has peopled his cast of Neolithic hunter-gatherers, with actors whose Caucasian leanings are not always apparent. The result is a proto-group that would be as home in the arctic as the land between the Tigris and Euphrates, the shores of the Ganges, or the Great Plains of the American west. As they move over the great mountains, the continent in question is definitively Africa, where our intrepid hunters look with befuddlement on the tools and products of agriculture. The proto-civilizations centered on the Mountain of God are a free association of Tibetan and Hindu, among others. The speculations of the captives about who they their captors are is a piquant pastiche of the most persistent theories about the beginnings of civilization that aren’t found in the standard history texts.

10,000 B.C. avoids irony and the worst excesses of heroic dialogue. It’s strictly a popcorn flick version of Joseph Campell’s hero’s journey that looks great even as it plays fast and very loose with geography, biology, and anything else that gets in its way.

Music and Lyrics

That rarest of beast, 2007’s Music and Lyrics offers a “chick flick” that also appeals to the men in the audience. The film introduces us to fictitious 80s chart-toppers “PoP!”, a group led by Colin Thompson (Scott Porter) and Alex Fletcher (Hugh Grant). When they disbanded, Colin went onto enormous solo success, while Alex wound up as just another pop culture has-been.

However, he continues to perform – albeit in front of increasingly tiny audience – and he hopes to get a break that will take him back into the charts. An opening presents itself when he gets the assignment to write a new song for pop phenomenon Cora Corman (Haley Bennett). The problem: Alex maintains a gift for tunes but not words.

After a disastrous attempt to pair Alex with a professional lyricist (Aasif Mandvi), he discovers his muse: substitute plant waterer Sophie Fisher (Drew Barrymore). She shows the ability to effortlessly toss off good lines, and Alex persuades her to become his partner. The movie follows all the pressures connected to their writing assignment – and other developments of a more romantic nature.

If you ask for one reason Music succeeds, I’ll give you two: Grant and Barrymore. Both are at their most charming and endearing here. Though Grant gets most of the funny lines, I think Barrymore probably gives the stronger performance. It’s her presence that allows Grant to be so loose and likable. She’s developing into the chick flick MVP, the woman you want to bring out the best in the male lead. How else can we explain how well her pairings with Adam Sandler have gone? Barrymore even managed to make Jimmy Fallon look like a decent screen presence.

Not that Grant is a slouch himself. He effortlessly conveys the spirit of a star on the decline, and he impresses with his own singing. When I originally watched the flick, I assumed someone else did the vocals, but it turns out Hugh carried the tunes himself. That’s a nice little bonus in addition to his amusing performance.

As one who spent much of the 80s in my teens, I certainly can easily remember the era, and that fact makes Music all the more enjoyable. The filmmakers get the little nuances right and pay a loving – not condescending – tribute to the period. Sure, the flick pokes fun at the goofier side of things, but it doesn’t do so in a mean-spirited way. It doesn’t hurt that “Pop Goes My Heart” really is a good tune; it truly could have been a hit.

If forced to do so, I can certainly find a few flaws in Music. The third act tends to drag, the characters veer toward the stereotypically wacky, and some of the plot turns feel wrong and contrived. None of these faults matter a whole lot, though. Music presents too much of a fun, warm and endearing experience for my to rain on its parade.
